An additional 96,000 humans had been injured, leaving many with permanent disabilities.

The effect of the war has been intense across Gaza, with whole neighborhoods destroyed. Civilian infrastructure, such as schools, colleges, shelters, and marketplaces, has also been targeted, resulting in widespread displacement. More than 1.5 million people have been forced to flee their homes, searching for secure haven in overcrowded shelters with confined entry to meals, water, and energy.

Hospitals Under Siege

The conflict has devastated Gaza’s healthcare machine. Israeli strikes have significantly damaged or absolutely destroyed many clinical facilities, leaving hospitals suffering. Out of Gaza’s 35 hospitals, at least 21 have ceased operations due to infrastructure damage, supply shortages, or fuel scarcity needed to operate life-saving equipment.

Some of the most affected hospitals include the Al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s biggest scientific center, which has been a focus for treating the lots of injured in the course of the warfare. Doctors report that patients are dying because of a lack of medicine, energy outages, and overcrowded wards. Al-Amal Hospital and Al-Quds Hospital face similar crises, with health professionals working in life-threatening conditions.

Health workers in Gaza bear a heavy cost. As of October 2024, as a minimum 165 doctors and 260 nurses have been killed while on duty, as hospitals and ambulances have been have been directly targeted in the attacks. The World Health Organization (WHO) has condemned those attacks on healthcare facilities as violations of international law.

Destruction and Hope

Satellite imagery reveals the scale of destruction, with large parts of Gaza reduced to rubble. Meanwhile, reconstruction efforts face foremost demanding situations, as Israel’s blockade of Gaza keeps to limit the entry of critical substances, which include scientific supplies.

Despite these challenges, the people of Gaza, at the side of the international humanitarian community, remain resilient. Efforts to support the injured, provide medical care, and rebuild homes continue, even under the threat of ongoing violence.
