Lahore Faces Severe Smog Crisis as Pollution Levels Skyrocket

Lahore air pollution has escalated to a crucial level, with the town now ranked as the second-most polluted in the world. As a result, the air quality index(AQI) has surged to a dangerous 780, signaling a severe environmental crisis.

The dense smog, blanketing much of Punjab, has consequently reduced visibility, creating chaos throughout the province. Critical shipping routes, such as the M-2 (Islamabad to Lahore), M-three (Lahore to Dera Ghazi Khan), and the Lahore-Sialkot dual motorway, were closed due to 0 visibility and dangerous conditions. The situation extends beyond Punjab, as sections of the M-4 (Pindi Bhattian to Multan) and M-5 (Multan to Sukkur) motorways have also been shut down, with Sindh now feeling the consequences of the smog spreading southward.

Causes of the Smog Crisis

Experts attribute this environmental crisis to a mix of vehicle emissions, industrial activities, and the widespread practice of crop burning. Cross-border pollution from northern India, where similar conditions prevail, has further exacerbated the situation. Punjab authorities have expressed plans to address the issue through diplomatic engagement with India.

Health Impact of Lahore’s Smog

Residents across affected cities, along with Faisalabad and Gujranwala, have reported health complications ranging from eye irritation to respiratory troubles. Tragically, the thick haze has also caused injuries, including a bus collision with a stationary truck in Gujranwala, which left seven injured, including three children.

The crisis has disrupted everyday life and financial activity, with businesses temporarily closing to protect employees from the dangerous air. Environmental experts are urging immediate measures to combat pollutants,  including stricter controls on industrial emissions, a crackdown on crop burning, and improved urban planning strategies.

Authorities are advising citizens to limit outdoor exposure, use air purifiers indoors, and wear protective mask. Despite these precautions, the situation remains dire, with no immediate relief in sight as winter situations conditions continue to trap pollutants in the atmosphere.
