Lahore’s Smog Crisis: Key Factors Behind Rising Air Pollution Identified

The Lahore smog crisis has become a significant environmental challenge. Rapid urbanization and industrial growth are contributing to the city’s deteriorating air quality. The increasing presence of industrial zones near residential areas and a rise in temperatures have worsened crisis. This situation is severely affecting on public health and calls for urgent measures to address the sources of air pollution.

Impact of Industrial Zones and Urbanization

One key factor contributing to the smog problem is the proximity of 33 square kilometers of industrial zones close to residential areas. The report warns that if industries are not relocated to designated business zones within the next decade, the damage caused to the environment and public health may be irreversible.

The Role of Temperature and Emissions

Rising temperatures, combined with commercial emissions and the ongoing loss of green spaces, have significantly worsened Lahore’s air quality, especially during the winter weather months. The situation is further worsened by methane emissions from nearby landfill sites.

Proposed Solutions: Scientific Landfill Sites and Relocation of Industries

To address these challenges, the report emphasizes the need to develop of scientific landfill sites located away from residential areas. Lahore has now become the most polluted city in Pakistan, faces a dire state of affairs, with  cities like Multan and Peshawar closely following pollution levels.

Government Actions and Emergency Response

In response to the crisis, the Director General of Environment has directed shopping malls and commercial plazas to install air purifiers as a preventive measure. Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan has has called for the imposition of an emergency in the province, stressing the need for immediate action to reduce the ongoing smog disaster.

The Governor highlighted that pollution levels have spiraled out of control in many districts of Punjab, resulting in a significant increase in hospitalizations for smog-related illnesses. Despite the closure of schools, faculties, and amusement parks, the situation remains critical. Traders have also opposing early market closures.

Urgency and Coordination for Effective Smog Control

Governor Khan has advocated for declaring a temporary emergency to manage the escalating pollution levels. He urgs all institutions to work together to combat the smog. The situation requires coordinated efforts to mitigate the harmful effects of Lahore’s smog and improve the city’s air quality.
